SPAWN Lab

Laboratory and art collective, Yarra Youth Services, Fitzroy VIC, 2020

Project description

SPAWN Lab is a vocational and experimental laboratory and art collective developing work programs, sustainable practices and professional opportunities for early-career artists. A partnership between Yarra Youth Services’ Artist in Residence program, the Centre for Projection and Little Projector Company, it set out to rethink how art is delivered in community contexts.

Launched in 2020 in response to COVID-19, the pilot brought the five Artists in Residence together with program alumni and Little Projector Company technicians. Through open-air seminars, one-on-one mentoring and street-testing sessions around Fitzroy, the artists experimented with projection in public space and developed pitch-ready proposals for future work.

SPAWN Lab built on several years of video art collaborations between Yarra Youth Services and Little Projector Company.
